FAQs

What is a Nurse Practitioner?

A nurse practitioner (NP) is an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) who has completed advanced graduate-level education and training. NPs are licensed to provide a wide range of healthcare services, including conducting physical exams, diagnosing and treating illnesses, prescribing medications, and educating patients on managing their health. With a focus on promoting wellness and preventing disease, nurse practitioners work collaboratively with physicians and other healthcare professionals to deliver comprehensive, patient-centered care. Known for their holistic approach and emphasis on patient education, nurse practitioners play a crucial role in delivering high-quality, accessible healthcare in a variety of settings, from primary care offices to specialty clinics.

Can you prescribe medication?

Yes. Nurse practitioners (NPs) are licensed healthcare professionals with the authority to prescribe medications under the supervision of a physician or as independent practitioners.

What is the difference between a mental health nurse practitioner and a psychiatrist?

A nurse practitioner (NP) is an advanced practice registered nurse who has completed a master's or doctoral degree program. NPs specializing in psychiatric/mental health have undergone additional training and certification. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who has completed medical school, followed by a residency in psychiatry. The main differences lie in their education and scope of practice, with psychiatrists having a medical degree and typically providing a wider range of services, while nurse practitioners have advanced nursing training and tend to focus on holistic care and medication management.
